DO YOU KINDLE?

This a.m., Amazon unveiled its new Kindle DX, a widescreen model of the electronic reader that is quickly revolutionizing the book publishing biz.

The new spin is that the Kindle is the It item for college students, who can easily upload their bulky textbooks to the reader instead of lugging them around. The 10-inch Kindle, which is just about a third- of-an-inch thick, can hold up to 3,500 books, magazines and documents.

But clocking in at a whopping $489 retail, the machine may cost these poor students more than the books would have run them. In any case, Amazon is partnering with five major universities to see how students use the new tool. They'll also be pairing with The New York Times and other major papers to offer reduced-cost Kindles for electronic delivery of the papers in areas where hard copies aren't available. The on-demand downloading of books and magazine is another fun features.

But while the Kindle does save paper and pennies -- NYTimes bestsellers and new releases will run you $9.99, compared to the $25 to $30 retail prices -- the jury's still out on whether it's worth the splurge. I, for one, will be waiting for the Technicolor version. This model, despite the steeper price tag, only offers up 16 shades of grey.

I don't have a Kindle, but from everything I've heard and read about it, it's #1 on my list of coveted items!

I never thought about the color (or rather the lack of color) aspect though. You're probably right to wait for that.
